Seventeen years ago above the planet Moord, members of the Black Novas (Jesse Alexander, Mister Z'zz and Titus) are on a rescue mission.

After blasting their way through a number of alien attackers, the Black Novas come up to a prison cell. Jesse Alexander quickly blasts a hole in the door to reveal the prisoners had been Gamora and Rocket Raccoon!

With weapons in hand, the Black Novas and the freed prisoners begin a fierce battle with the aliens. The fight comes to a swift end when Jesse blasts his way out of the prison and destroys the aliens' ship by flying straight through it! Titus catches the injured Jesse Alexander and the team escapes in their starship.

In the present day in Carefree, Arizona, a drunk Jesse Alexander finishes the Black Nova story he was telling his son Sam Alexander by puking in a school toilet. Sam's father is a janitor at Sam's school and Sam comes along to help him finish the work so he won't get fired. The high school student takes his dad home and puts him to bed in a small room in the garage. In the room, Jesse has scientific equations, star maps (which appears to be of the Shi'Ar and Kree galaxies with Jesse triangulating a number of points to the Fault) and spaceship models (including the Nova Prime Starship) along with his Nova helmet.

Sam goes into the house and informs his mom that his dad is in bed. He pats his sister Kaelynn on the head and goes to bed himself.

The next day at Carefree High School, Sam Alexander is racing to get to class. Suddenly, he is knocked off his skateboard by the school bully Moffet. Before a fight can break out, the school principal, Mr. Philbin, steps in to restore order. After school, Sam runs into a fellow classmate named Carrie. She admits to her skateboarding friend that she knows he helps his dad with cleaning the school so he won't get fired. Sam tells her that he feels he is going nowhere in his life and doesn't want to end up like his dad. He also tells her that he thinks she's cute before skating away.

Fifteen years ago in the Rigellian Empire of the Milky Way Galaxy, a Black Nova ship is being fired up by the Rigellians! It turns out that the Black Novas have stolen one of the Rigellians' Recorder units for the information it has stored inside it. Titus tells Jesse to get ready to eject from the ship. They are at the closest jump port to Earth and they will not be this close for a very long time. Jesse Alexander has chosen to leave the Black Novas in order to marry an Earth woman and live on Earth.

Back in the present, Jesse finishes telling the story to Kaelynn before she goes to sleep as Sam listens from the hallway. He turns to see his mother standing there. They begin to argue about Sam's father. She tells Sam that he has no idea of the sacrifices he has made. Jesse's son only sees a high school janitor that can hardly keep his job. Sam runs out of the house and finds himself on the edge of town.

Later, Sam stops in Kaelynn's room. She's worried that the Black Novas will come back to get their father. Sam doesn't have the heart to tell her that he thinks Jesse's stories aren't real.

The next day, Sam finds the boys' restroom is out of order. Moffet starts picking a fight and Sam responds by throwing a punch. Moffet easily dodges it and hits Sam. Mr. Philbin steps in and sends Sam to his office.

That night, Sam runs in to Jesse Alexander's room in the garage to tell him that he was suspended for fighting. He finds the room in shambles and Jesse's helmet gone. The young teenager believes that his father has run out on the family and goes to find him. As he leaves, Sam's skateboard hits a rock and Sam is knocked unconscious when he hits the ground!

Three days later, Sam wakes up in the hospital. He finds himself face to face with Rocket Raccoon and Gamora who is holding Jesse's Nova helmet!
