Series #3 - NOVA #5 Cover Date: September 1999 Writer: Erik Larsen Artist: Coy Turnbull Inkers: Erik Larsen & Al Milgrom Letterers: Sharpefont & PT Colorist: Steve Oliff Editor: Ruben Diaz Title: "Lo, There Shall Come A Spider" |

The two also discuss Rich's power problems. Rich calls his roommates, Bernie Dillon and Roger "Caps" Cooper, to bring him some new clothes since he is too drained to activate his costume's tesseract release.
Meanwhile, in the cloud city of the Avians, the people are demanding their renegade scientist, The Condor, be brought to Avian territory to face trial. Their leader, Red Raven, agrees and orders the return of the Condor.
Back at Ginger's home, Bernie and Caps have brought Rich a set of awful looking clothes and teases him about being with Ginger. Rich tells them nothing happened and that he needs to get over to his brother's lab for tests. Bernie reminds Rich that he has a big baseball game later in the day.
At Robert Rider's lab in Queens, NY, Rich and his brother discuss the problems he's having with the Nova powers. Robert tells Rich that while he can measure his powers, a solution is beyond his expertise. He recommends that Rich go back to see Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. Rich doesn't understand why Robert can't help since he's a brilliant scientist and has done some amazing work. Robert reminds him that the robot he invented years ago turned out to be the evil Dr. Sun. In the shadows, the robot form of Dr. Sun is watching them.
On the other side of the world, the Sphinx has murdered thousands of people in order to gain the energy necessary to bring him back to life. After fully recharging, the Sphinx leaves to begin his plans for world domination.
At the ESU baseball game, Rich is visited by his former New Warriors' teammate, Speedball. Speedball wants to reform the team and asks Rich to join him. Rich tells him that his life is too busy right now to be part of the team. He doesn't tell Speedball that he feels rejoining the New Warriors would be a step backwards in his career as Nova. Rich's goal is to be a member of the world's premier superteam, the Avengers.
Out on the field, Rich has hit his fourth home run of the game and has gained the attention of Jennifer Smith. Bernie Dillon interrupts their conversation to tell Rich that his parents' condo is on fire! Rich runs off to save his parents and Roger is left to take his place in the game.
At the site of the burning condo, Spider-Man has been saving lives and battling the villains responsible for the blaze. The supervillains are Badd Axe, Firearms and Vampiro. Nova joins Spider-Man and they capture the three supervillains after a tremendous battle.
Afterwards, Spider-Man has a talk with Nova concerning the Nova costume. He is concerned that Nova's uniform may actually be a living entity. The wall-crawler had a costume that behaved just like Nova's and it turned out to be the evil entity named Venom. Nova dismisses the warning and tends to his parents who have escaped the blaze.
The Riders are understandably upset that they have lost everything. Rich's brother, Robert, tells his parents that he has a surprise for them. The Riders drive out to their old home in Hempstead. Robert has bought the house and gives it to his parents as an anniversary present. Mr. and Mrs. Rider are overjoyed and very grateful to Robert. Rich feels unappreciated since, as Nova, he has saved his parents and the world many times over. His father tells Rich that while he knows how much Nova has done, it'll be nice to have his old workshop again. All Rich can do is sigh.
