Drax finds the lifeless body of Thanos but senses that his foe is still alive elsewhere. If he were truly dead, Drax knows the burning in his soul would stop since he was created to destroy Thanos.

Elsewhere, Thanos has used the Time Stone to repeatedly cheat death by returning to the past. His goal is to defeat the Nova Corps who has always been able to stop him.

In the past, Thanos appears at his reoccurring point of return on top of a building looking at the Bakian family. The family is setting up camp when Fayne asks for another story about her mother. At this point, Thanos initiates his plan to earn the family's trust by offering them food.

After the group has eaten, they find themselves attacked by the Annihilation Wave! Suddenly, Thanos jumps into the group of alien attackers and begins fighting them. He tells the Bakians to run. As the family is turned away, the mad Titan quickly kills the bug. When the Bakians return, their rescuer pretends the fight took more effort than it truly did in order to look more heroic to the family.

However, Thanos knows he's going to have to work harder to earn the trust of Eve Bakian who has just arrived. He offers her a Nova Pulse Cannon he claims to have gotten while fighting alongside other Novas. Thanos mentions that he fought with Jesse and Sam Alexander who were killed by the alien bugs.

The evil manipulator decides to use his final gift to convince Nova that he is sincere. He tells Eve that just before the Alexanders died, they gave him the Time Stone. Once Thanos gives the female Nova the stone, she allows him to come with their family. Inside, he's angry that he had to give up a prize he killed a platoon of Novas to gain but realizes it's necessary for his plan to work.

Later at Nova Headquarters, Thanos suggests Eve use the Mind Stone which is in her daughter Anwen's possession to find the other stone stolen from the murdered Nova Corps.

Elsewhere, Star-Lord and Gamora are flying away from Nova Headquarters at top speed. Peter Quill is feeling confident that they can stop any bug swarm with the weapons they stole from the Nova Corps. He reminds Gamora that they stole a miniaturized jetpack, a gravimetric cannon, EMP cannons and an EMP emitter. However, he admits that he was not able to find any Nova Stars.

But his biggest prize is a powerful gem he has placed in a containment tube.

Suddenly, a large blast hits their ship! The Bakian family, now powered by Nova Stars from Eve, and Thanos have flown in and begun their attack!

Gamora attempts to return fire but the group easily avoids her blasts. Anwen launches forward which distracts her Nova Headquarters and her sister Fayne. Due to the distraction, Fayne's armor gets hit by a shot and she falls towards the ground far below. Thanos swoops in and catches her before she can be hurt.

Eve uses the Mind Stone to telepathically order Peter to land his spacecraft or she'll force it down.

After landing, the two thieves attempt to negotiate an agreement with the Novas. Eve bluntly tells them that in return for the stone, she'll let them live. Peter stubbornly keeps trying to get something in exchange. Nova offers three Nova Stars. Peter quickly rejects the offer saying he wants three hundred of them! Eve holds firm on three. Peter finally agrees.

As he prepares to leave, Gamora says she's staying to fight the swarm of alien bugs heading towards them. The two groups join forces and speed towards the attackers. Eve uses the Time Stone to freeze the bugs in time.

As Eve Bakian prepares herself to use the Mind Stone to track the rest of the aliens, she suddenly has a vision of a man. He appears to be using another stone to destroy a city before gazing directly at her.

She awakens to find Anwen asking her if she's okay. Eve explains the vision to her daughter and says she doesn't think the man was someone who would help them.

Anwen asks about the stone she had found earlier inside one of the bugs. Nova informs her that it was the Mind Stone and it's extremely powerful. Eve's oldest daughter wonders if the stone could bring her grandfather back from the dead. Her mother tells her that it would be too dangerous and too difficult.

After Eve heads to the bridge of the ship, Thanos begins talking to Anwen. The mad Titan explains that family is weakness. That weakness prevented her from saving her grandfather and it makes her weaker as she mourns him. He confesses that he survives because he is alone. He informs her that the world has no mercy and questions if she is strong enough to make hard choices.

On the bridge, Eve instructs Peter to land the ship in a nearby clearing. She senses the possessor of another stone is nearby. As they search the area, Gamora admits Eve was right and pulls out her battle axe to fight the stranger.

She stops in front of a tree only to discover the tree is alive!

As the team debate the best way to get the stone free, the living tree begins imitating a few simple words it hears; eye, hmmm, grew, root. Everyone stops when they hear the tree proclaim "I am Groot."

Later on the ship, Thanos admits to himself that he cannot hide his disgust for much longer. With the stone from Groot, Eve now holds four of the six stones. The villain's patience is tested by Eve's leadership and Groot constantly repeating "I am Groot".

Nova informs the group that they are close to another stone and to be ready for anything. In his thoughts, Thanos corrects her by thinking she only needs to prepare for death.
